There is a disturbing association between obesity and gastrointestinal-related cancers, severity of Crohn's disease, Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (FGIDs), such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Dyspepsia, chronic gastrointestinal pain or discomfort and other gastrointestinal issues. Studies indicate that between 5-10% of the US population suffers from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), the most common FGID.

Obesity is a chronic and stigmatizing condition that has become a serious health problem in the U.S. and most western countries because of its prevalence, major health consequences, and severe economic impact. It is estimated that illnesses related to obesity are responsible for 300,000 deaths in the United States each year.

As of the last census, over one-third of U.S. adults (35.7%) were considered obese. In 2008, medical costs associated with obesity were an estimated $147 billion, and people who were obese paid an average of $1,429 more than those of normal weight. Between 20072008, the prevalence of obesity increased in adults at all income and education levels.

While there are unlimited weight loss strategies to choose from, including diet supplements, trend diets, meal plan diets and other trendy diet strategies, Dr. Sachar is committed to the development of lifestyle changes, which will help every patient maintain healthy weight, muscle mass and cardio-vascular fitness. Good eating habits are fundamental to the maintenance of a healthy diet, and balanced nutrition.
